Santa Routine
This particular routine was passed unto me by Ken Little. Ken has sadly passed away now but was a great entertainer and magician. He was also a founding member of the U.S.M. and a childhood friend of Billy McComb.

It's an old ruse in children's entertainment to get things wrong and have the children verbally correct you. I don't like doing it too much during a show because you can just end up looking stupid to the older kids. I think this routine works because it takes the concept so far that it turns into a game and, by the end, the kids all love shouting the corrections.

The routine is completely verbal and can be used on it's own. I pull it out of the bag when I have a show and have to keep the kid's entertained while setting up or sometimes go through it while I'm making Christmas balloons in front of a crowd.

As I said it was made up by Ken Little, but I have been using it a while and added a few bits of my own. The corrections are fairly obvious so I don't need to write out what the kids shout. I'll just write KR (kids react) in the parts where they shout back.

The routine:

Well, it's getting close to Christmas Eve and we all know who shows up late at night on Christmas Eve, don't we? KR .
Yes that's right..the Easter Bunny! KR
No , of course, it's Santa! I know all about Santa ,in fact, I am some what of an expert. I'm sure I know a lot more about Santa than you lot do. KR
Well, I'll prove it and tell you all about him. Santa is a big fat man with a big black beard KR
Sorry, yes, that's right a big white beard and a bright green coat. KR
A red one, hmm yes, I think your right. Anyhow, on Christmas Eve he get's all his presents and put's them in a box KR
OK Sack. Then he get's his sack and carries it out to his car KR motorbike KR Jet plane KR
A sleigh, how could I forget about his lovely sleigh pulled by six beautiful ...donkeys KR
Reindeer, I should've known because I always liked the head reindeer. He's called Humphrey KR
Rudolph? That's right, Rudolph the purple-nosed reindeer KR
Can you name all the reindeer? I can Rudolph, Dasher, Donner, Sleepy Grumpy, Doc...KR
OK but I definitely know one of them: Olive! You know, from the song "Olive, the other reindeer" KR
Anyhow, he flies though the night pulled by the reindeer and lands in your garden KR
On your roof? Are you sure? Then he climbs in through the window KR through the cat-flap KR
Down the chimney? How odd! Does anybody leave some food out for him? KR I bet you all leave a Big Mac and fries out for santa and a banana for his reindeer.KR
Then he get's his sack, creeps into the room and leaves all your presents in your shoe KR Ok, leaves all the presents in your underpants KR
Christmas Stocking, that's right. Well, I bet your all glad I was able to tell you all about Santa!

The End

Well, that's it. Younger children love reacting to it. When they get used to the game of corrections I like to ham it up a bit, I pause before I say the wrong word to build the tension a little as the kid's are anxiously listening out for the next mistake. Under 5's love repetition, so you can even do recaps during the routine going back to the start and going through all the mistakes a little quicker getting faster and faster every time you do it. It's a very adaptable routine and can be lengthened and shortened as necessary. I often add other mistakes, sometimes I tell them how Santa lives in Cullybacky (name local town) with all his gnomes etc you get the idea
